Our Japan Tip to Tail Explorer is the ultimate ride for those who want to ride from the very furthest northern point in Japan to the furthest southern point.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime ride that will last 40 days and 40 nights and give a rider the chance to touch every single prefecture in Japan except Okinawa.

  • We will only offer this tour one time.
  • We will only take a maximum of 12 riders.
  • We will only take MotoQuest repeat riders.

 

Guides on this trip will be Phil Freeman and Chie Okamoto.

The tour format will feature two point-to-point travel days, followed by two nights at the same hotel. Rinse and Repeat.

There will be no 5% repeater discount, because everyone will already be a repeater.

We will feature out-of-the-way travel lodges with hot springs and other quirky lodging.

THE ITINERARY

ARRIVAL DAY

DAY 1 - Arrival in Chitose.
Arrive no later than 1:00pm so that we have time to get you to the motorcycle and do some paperwork and have you do a test ride.
Welcome Dinner tonight. Stay in Chitose.

DAY 2 - Chitose to Furano
Ride a beautiful road through the Hokkaido wilderness to the ski town of Furano.
Stay near Furano.

DAY 3 - Furano to Bifuka
Ride along the Tokachi Mountain Range and then cross some great country by side roads to the Sturgeon capital of Hokkaido, Bifuka.

DAY 4 - Bifuka Free Day
Today is the day we top out at the most northern point of Japan. Great country roads on the way up, and on the way south, making a big loop. We will also ride along Japan's loneliest coast, south of Wakkanai.
Stay in Bifuka.

DAY 5 - Bifuka to Lake Shikaribetsu
We will choose a nice route through forested and mountainous countryside as we make our way around Daisetsuzan National Park. We will say at the side of Shikaribetsu Lake, tucked deep in the forests of the National Park.

DAY 6 - Lake Shikaribetsu to Lake Shikotsu
From one hot springs lakeside hotel to another..we have some great backroads planned as we cut across Hokkaido.
Stay on Lake Shikotsu.

DAY 7 - Lake Shikotsu to Obokoso
We will take the long way to a hot springs hotel nestled in the mountains. Some of the time, we will be on the toll highway, but its only to get to the best roads. We will pass by Lake Toya, Mt. Yotei and enjoy some spectacular coastal riding the finish the day.
Stay near Obokoso.

DAY 8 - Obokoso to Shimofuro
We will hug the cost until the city of Hokodate, where we will board a ferry and cross over to Aomori Prefecture on Honshu Island. Once there, we will ride to the sleepy little fishing port town of Shimofuro for the night. Get ready for fresh fish that evening.
Stay in Shimofuro.

DAY 9 - Shimofuro to Lake Towada
We will ride one of the most remote coastal roads in Japan as we make our way to scenic Lake Towada.
Stay at Lake Towada.

DAY 10 - Lake Towada Free Day
Relax, catch up on work, ect, or...go riding! We will plan to ride over to the eastern coast and ride the epic Tsugaru Iwaki Skyline road, known for its 69 hairpin turns. Get ready.
Stay at Lake Towada.

DAY 11 - Lake Towada to Lake Tozawa
From one beautiful lake to another. We are going to choose some delicious backroads as we make our way southward.

DAY 12 - Lake Tozawa to Minase River
There are two ways to get there: direct and fun. We will be going the fun way, choosing some secondary roads full of curves and elevation changes before we arrive in a tiny hot springs destination by the Minase River.

DAY 13- Minase River to Mt. Gassan Area
Expect one-lane roads with hundreds of curves throughout the day. Yep, we are going into the forest and may never come out.
Stay in the Mt. Gassan Area.

DAY 14 - Mt Gassan Area to Lake Akimoto
Time to climb back off the mountain and get on some twisty backroads as we make our way south to the Lake Akimoto area. You will be ready for some relaxing warm water!

DAY 15 - Lake Akimoto to Nikko National Park
There are a hundred ways to get from point A to point B, but we will be riding the most scenic, twisty bits with one and two lanes as we continue to make our way south.
Stay in Nikko National Park.

DAY 16 - Nikko National Park Free Day
You may choose to relax, you may choose to ride to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Nikko, or you may want to ride with the guide. Whatever you do, you will nail it. Phil will choose a fun loop to keep you busy during the day.

DAY 17 - Nikko National Park to Joshin’etsukogen National Park
It's time to be surrounded by volcanoes, and that is exactly what we will do.

DAY 18 - Joshin’etsukogen National Park Free Day
We plan to go check out the famed monkeys of Jigokudani Yaen-Koen today. We may even check out a cool road or two there and back again.

DAY 19 - Joshin'etsukogen National Park to Mt. Fuji area
We will cross through the mountains to a place where you overlook Lake Kawaguchi and iconic Mt. Fuji.

DAY 20 - Mt. Fuji to Matsukawa
We will head over to Mt. Fuji and ride up to the highest parking lot before making our way to Matsukawa, where we will stay at a hot spring that overlooks Japan's Southern Alps.

DAY 21 - Matsukawa to Lake Hamana
From the land of apples and mountains to the ocean we go. Get ready for an delicious dinner of fruits from the sea.

DAY 22 - Lake Hamana to Toba
We will cross by ferry to Mie Prefecture and the sea-side city of Toba. We will get in early to the hotel today, so extra credit riding along the coast is on the menu.

Day 23 - Toba Free Day
You may want to relax and catch up, read, ect..or..go riding! We plan to go visit one of Japan's most prestigious Shinto Shrines in the city of Ise.

Day 24 - Toba to Akame
Like Ninjas and Waterfalls? Then we have something very special planned. We are planning a half day ride to Akame, where we have a chance to hike a secret Ninja trail connecting 48 unbelievably beautiful waterfalls. You will be transported to another place today.

Day 25 - Akame to Wakayama
We will head cross country today through what seems like Jurassic Park as we traverse Nara and Wakayama prefecture today. We will sleep to the sounds of the ocean tonight.

Day 26 - Wakayama to Tsurugi Area
First thing first, we board a ferry, headed to Shikoku Island. We will stop briefly at Ryozenji Temple, the first of eighty-eighty for which Shikoku is famous. You will see pilgrims walking from one to another the entire time you are on Shikoku. We stay in a steep river valley on a gorgeous slice of road. Why not?

Day 27 - Tsurugi to Shimokagiyama Area
Get ready for world-class riding as we delve deep into the island of Shikoku. We will stop briefly at Nagoro, famously known as the "Scarecrow Village" and keep riding epic roads all day long until we reach Shimokagiyama.
Stay in Shimokagiyama Area.

Day 28 - Shimokagiyama Area to Mikame
A shorter day by design but with some great coastal roads. We are going to a place known for fresh bream and mandarin oranges.
Stay in Mikame.

Day 29 - Mikame to Kitaura
We will cross by ferry to our third and final main Japanese island: Kyushu. We will hug the coast as we make our way to a sleepy wine-glass beach with rustic cabins.
Stay at Kitaura.

Day 30 - Kitaura to Kirishima Kinkowan National Park Area
We will take some extraordinarily twisty one-lane roads through impossibly rugged country as we make our way to our destination.

Day 31 - Kirishima Kinkowan National Park Area Free Day
We are headed out to touch the southern point of mainland Japan today at Cape Sata in Kagoshima Prefecture. We will also get a chance to check out the unstable volcano of Sakurajima on the way back to the hotel. Why not?

Day 32 - Kirishima Kinkowan National Park Area to Tsuchibami
We will cut cross country today slicing through the National Park with our sights on a nice hot spring hotel riverside.

Day 33 - Tsuchibami to Harajo
We will make our way down a collection of islands and cross by ferry to the town of Harajo. We may even check out a castle while we are there.
Stay in Harajo.

Day 34 - Harajo to Nagasaki Area
We have a shorter day, but that does not mean we can't go exploring after we get to our destination.
Stay in Nagasaki Area.

Day 35 - Nagasaki Area Free Day
We plan to go into Nagasaki and check out the Peace Park.
Stay in Nagasaki Area

Day 36 - Nagasaki Area to Yobuko
We will make our way along the coast and by small, secondary roads in Kyushu. We will be staying ocean side tonight.
Stay in Yobuko.

Day 37 - Yobuko to Hitomaru
We will jump on the toll highway and cross over to Honshu Island. We will take a moment to watch the heavy marine traffic threading the tidal waters between the islands. We will continue up the coast and stay at a place where you can watch the sunset while you bathe in hot springs.
Stay in Hitomaru.

Day 38 - Hitomaru to Arifuku
We will do a little surf and a little turf in terms of roads as we head to our historic hot springs destination.
Stay in Arifuku.

Day 39 - Arifuku to Izumo
We will enjoy both mountain roads and coastal roads as we head to Izumo. It is home to another of Japan's most important Shinto Shrines. We will have a chance to check it out this afternoon.
Stay in Izumo.

Day 40 - Izumo to Tsuyama
Country roads by way of river valleys and through forests are the order of the day, as we finally wrap up what can only be described as world-class ride through Japan. We will turn in the motorcycles and have a farewell dinner tonight.

Day 41 - Tsuyama to ?
Today is the day the group disperses. If anyone is up for tagging the last of prefectures, Phil will be happy to go with you today as an extra credit.
We will make sure to take you to the Okayama airport or Okayama City today.
